In Italy, weeks of fruitless search efforts ended in a matter of hours thanks to a red helmet analyzing drone footage by artificial intelligence.
Elchi.az reports that the discovery of a missing mountaineer in the Piedmont region of Italy highlighted the life-saving potential of artificial intelligence in search and rescue operations. In this case, searches that could have lasted weeks or even months resulted in hours.
The alarm was raised when experienced mountaineer and orthopedic surgeon Nicola Ivaldo went missing. 66-year-old Ivaldo was reported missing after he did not come to work between Sunday and Monday night. He had set off alone and had not shared his destination with anyone. The only clue for the rescue teams was his car, located in the town of Castello in Pontechianale, and the last signal from his phone.
The search area was vast
This information indicated that Ivaldo was heading towards one of the two iconic peaks of the Cottian Alps – Monviso, located at an altitude of 3841 meters, or its neighbor Visolotto. However, the hundreds of kilometers of trail networks and numerous routes on both mountains greatly expanded the search area. The good weather conditions and crowds on popular routes on the day of his disappearance suggested that the experienced mountaineer had chosen a more remote route.
For about a week, more than 50 rescuers searched the area. Helicopters also conducted numerous aerial searches. But with early snowfall in late September, hopes of finding Ivaldo alive dwindled and the search was called off.
