Hamas plans to elect a new leader this month

The Hamas movement plans to elect a new leader this month.

According to Elchi.az, two sources in the organization told Reuters.

The movement’s leadership post is vacant after Israel destroyed Yahya Sinwar in 2024.

The main candidates for the leadership post are Khalil al-Hayya and Khaled Meshal.

Both candidates are members of the five-member leadership council that has been running the movement since Sinwar’s death. His predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed by Israel during a visit to Iran in 2024.

According to sources, the election process has already begun. The Hamas leader is elected by a 50-member Council by secret ballot.
