German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said he hopes the US will participate in a possible joint operation by NATO countries to strengthen Greenland’s security.

“We share the US concern that there is a need to strengthen the defense of this part of Denmark. We want to jointly improve the security situation for Greenland. I think the Americans will also participate in this process,” Merz said during his visit to India.
According to the agency, the possible operation could be called “Arctic Sentry”, similar to the missions that NATO carries out in other regions, especially in the Baltic Sea.
European countries hope that this initiative will prevent US President Donald Trump from using Denmark’s weak defense potential in Greenland as an excuse for Washington’s territorial claims to the island.
