The German Meteorological Service (DWD) has issued a red alert for 9 states as temperatures in Germany have dropped to -20 degrees.
Elchi.az reports that Germany, experiencing the harshest winter in recent years, has been hit by a snowstorm caused by the “Elli” low-pressure system. Following snowfall and storms that began in the north and east of the country, the German Meteorological Service (DWD) issued a red alert for 9 states. The DWD warned of heavy snowfall and icing in the states of Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Thuringia, and Bavaria until noon on Friday. German Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnider urged citizens to be extremely cautious. Pointing out the danger of unexpected heavy snowfall and ice formation, Schnider said, “People should avoid anything that is not absolutely necessary. There are signs that the situation could be very dangerous in some areas. People should be aware of this and not take it lightly. Something serious is approaching us; anyone who does not have to go outside should stay home.” Hessen’s Interior Minister Roman Posek today called on people to avoid unnecessary car travel and not to use bicycles. The city administration of Cologne in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia also called on citizens to stay away from forests and parks due to the risk of falling branches as a result of severe storms and snowfall.
