Not a horror movie: More than 100 human skulls found in his house

Investigations into attacks on a historic cemetery in Pennsylvania have revealed “horror movie-like” scenes at the home of Jonathan Gerlach, 34. Authorities found more than 100 human skulls and numerous bones in the suspect’s basement.
Elchi.az reports that Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouz called the incident his detectives encountered during a search of Gerlach’s home in Ephrata on Thursday a “horror movie come to life” at a press conference.
Among the remains found in the basement were more than 100 skulls, as well as mummified hands and feet, two decaying human torsos and baby bones. Some of the bones were reportedly on shelves, while others were hanging from the ceiling.
Caught in the act
Gerlach was caught leaving the historic Moriah Mount Cemetery, located between Philadelphia and Yeadon, with a bag in his hand. Inside the bag were the mummified remains of two young children, three skulls and various bones.
In his initial statement to police, the suspect confessed to stealing approximately 30 sets of human remains from the cemetery.
Jonathan Gerlach has been charged with a total of 574 crimes, including theft, mistreatment of corpses, desecration of graves and trespassing.
Authorities said some of the remains discovered were 200 years old, while others belonged to people who had recently died, some with pacemakers.
Investigation expands
The investigation team is investigating whether Gerlach sold the bones online or used them for a specific ritual.
The possibility that the remains were stolen not only from Mount Moriah, but also from other cemeteries in the area, is being considered. The suspect is being held on $1 million bail.
