The Donald Trump administration has announced its decision to withdraw from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), considered the cornerstone of international climate cooperation, and a total of 66 international organizations.
Elchi.az reports that, according to a White House memorandum released on Tuesday, the US will become the first country to withdraw from this fundamental agreement, which it joined in 1992 under the George H.W. Bush administration and was ratified by Congress.
A historic break in climate diplomacy
While the UNFCCC does not directly limit the use of fossil fuels, it offers a global framework aimed at keeping atmospheric pollution at a level that will “prevent dangerous human interference.” All important negotiations, such as the 1995 Kyoto Protocol and the 2015 Paris Agreement, have taken place within this agreement. The US withdrawal from this structure will eliminate the country’s obligation to submit its annual climate pollution inventory and will also prevent its official participation in international climate summits.
