The Trump administration discussed making one-time payments of between $10,000 and $100,000 per person to Greenland residents to persuade them to secede from Denmark.
Elchi.az reports with reference to its sources.
Two interlocutors said that the exact amount of such payments, as well as the mechanism for their organization, have not yet been determined.
As the agency notes, this initiative serves as an explanation of how the United States could try to buy an island with a population of approximately 57,000, despite Copenhagen’s statements that Greenland is not for sale.
Trump has repeatedly stated the importance of Greenland joining the United States. During his first term, he offered to buy the island and expressed confidence that the island could be annexed in March 2025, and threatened Copenhagen with trade tariffs if he refused.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen rejects these claims, stressing that the island is part of the kingdom.
