Fall emphasized that these attacks are a serious violation of fundamental human rights, including the right to life, and noted that the targeting of women and children is unacceptable.
Mohamed Fall also stated that the attacks seriously violate the right to education.
Fall noted that the UN is committed to continuing its cooperation with the Nigerian government to strengthen the protection of civilians and create a safer educational environment.
According to initial reports, 50 people were killed, many people were kidnapped, and food products in the market were looted in the attack by gang members on a market in Niger State on January 3.
Nigeria has long faced attacks by armed gangs in various parts of the country, as well as terrorist organizations such as Boko Haram and ISWAP, the West African branch of ISIS. Although kidnapping is punishable by death, cases of kidnapping for ransom occur frequently. Armed individuals usually target villages, schools, and travelers, demanding ransom.
