Great Britain has taken a new step to combat obesity by banning the advertising of unhealthy foods on television and the Internet before 9:00 p.m. local time.
Elchi.az reports that, according to a written statement by the British Ministry of Health, according to the new rules, advertisements for food and drinks classified as less healthy will be banned on television from 5:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and will be blocked on online platforms at all hours of the day.
The ban covers 13 product categories that are thought to be the biggest contributors to childhood obesity. These include soft drinks, chocolate and confectionery, pizza, cakes and ice cream, as well as some breakfast cereals, porridge, sandwiches, sugary baked goods and flavored yogurts.
Whether a product falls under the advertising restriction will be determined by a scoring system based on its nutritional values. Advertisements for products rich in saturated fat, salt and sugar and beyond acceptable limits will be prohibited. Advertising of products considered healthier will be allowed.
The rules will be monitored by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). The government aims to encourage the food industry to make product ingredients healthier with this rule.
