Italian Prime Minister calls Venezuelan opposition leader

Italian government: Meloni discussed the transfer of power in Venezuela with Machado.
Elchi.az reports that, according to the website of the Italian government, on January 4, 2026, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Machado to discuss the prospects for a “peaceful and democratic transfer of power in Venezuela.”
The statement said: “During the telephone conversation, it was agreed that Maduro’s departure opened a new chapter of hope for the Venezuelan people and that the people could once again enjoy the fundamental principles of democracy and the rule of law.”
Earlier, Meloni issued a statement on the Italian government’s website, noting that the Italian government considers the US attack on Venezuela to be “defensive measures against hybrid security attacks.” Meloni also stated that Italy “has always supported the Venezuelan people’s desire for a democratic transition” and condemned Maduro’s repression. After Maduro’s overthrow, María Machado wrote on X that the Venezuelan opposition was ready to seize power, restore order and release political prisoners.
On January 3, 2026, the US attacked several targets in Venezuela, capturing President Nicolas Maduro and his wife and bringing them to the US. The US now intends to prosecute Maduro for drug trafficking crimes.
Vice President Delsi Rodriguez was appointed interim president of Venezuela, but the US intends to govern Venezuela itself during the transition.
On January 3, US President Donald Trump announced that Rodriguez had agreed to cooperate with the Americans and questioned Machado’s ability to become the new president.
