US President Donald Trump has said he will seek to launch the second phase of a peace plan to resolve the situation in Gaza as soon as possible, ahead of a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Elchi.az reports that Trump made the remarks in a statement to CNN.
“Very soon, as soon as possible, but disarmament is necessary, we must disarm Hamas,” the president said.
More than two months after Trump’s visit to Egypt to sign the Gaza peace deal, the main provisions of the deal remain uncertain.
The second phase of the agreement includes the disarmament of Hamas, the start of reconstruction work and the establishment of a post-war government. Gaza’s new governance plan focuses on the creation of a “Peace Council” chaired by Trump and other world leaders.
Answering reporters’ questions on Monday about when the reconstruction of Gaza could begin, the US president suggested it would “begin very soon.”
