General elections are held in Myanmar

Myanmar is holding its first general election since the junta came to power in the 2021 military coup.

Elchi.az reports with reference to Reuters that activity is mostly observed at polling stations in Yangon and Mandalay, the country’s largest cities.

Min Aung Hlaing, the leader of the Myanmar military junta, voted in the capital Naypyitaw.

According to the authorities, the elections are part of the transition to civilian administration.

The voting will be held in three stages in various settlements throughout January. The final results are expected to be announced by the end of January. Parties closely affiliated with the military are expected to win the majority of seats.

According to the Myanmar CEC, voting is being conducted for the first time via more than 50,000 electronic machines. This will speed up the counting of votes and eliminate the possibility of fraud. The voting process is being monitored by observers from Russia, China, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Vietnam, Nicaragua and India.
